Blue Spaders
by Gen. Paul F. Gorman (The Cantigny Military History Series, 1997)
This unit history was written by Gen. Paul F. Gorman, legendary co-founder of TRADOC, the U.S. Army’s Training and Doctrine Command, and a combat veteran of the 26th Infantry Regiment. Gen. Gorman and I worked on his manuscript for the better part of a year, in doing so forming a relationship that was amicable, productive, and ultimately quite successful: upon its publication in 1997, Blue Spaders was quite well received by reviewers--including, notably, the late (and equally legendary) Col. Harry G. Summers, who reviewed the book for Vietnam magazine.
From Col. Harry G. Summers, author of On Strategy: The Vietnam War in Context
“Vietnam is not the only war brought to life in this riveting anecdotal history. Some chapters also recall the Blue Spaders’ exploits in World War I, when one of its battalions was commanded by reserve Major Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., who later commanded the entire regiment. Also chronicled is the “relentless pursuit” the regiment made from its World War II landing in Normandy on D‑Day through V‑E Day, by which time it had advanced across Europe and into Czechoslovakia.”
