No Mission Too Difficult! Old Buddies of the 1st Division
Tell All About World War II
by Blythe Foote Finke, edited by Steven Weingartner, contributing writer.
(The Cantigny Military History Series and Contemporary Books, 1995)
A combination oral history and multi-author memoir, plus a narrative history--which I wrote--of the 1st Infantry Division in the Second World War, this book was especially well received by wartime veterans of the Big Red One.The oral history sections were derived from the transcripts of interviews conducted by Blythe Foote Finke, wife of division veteran John Finke (who was among the first of the assaulting troops to ascend the heights above Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944). I also re-interviewed many of the contributors and revised their accounts accordingly; wrote biographical sketches; compiled timeline of events, collected photos and wrote captions; wrote flap and back cover copy; and oversaw production.
From Edward M Coffman:
“What one finds in these pages is . . . the human experience of war with its highs and lows. . . . One comes away from this book with not only a better understanding of what war was like for the men who fought and a greater appreciation of the camaraderie and the pride that these men of the 1st Division share, but also why that division has always been outstanding.”
